8. Troubleshooting
The following description summarizes the probable cause of and remedy for general failure by
item. Immediate countermeasures should be taken before a failure is inflamed if any symptom is
detected.

Hard to start the engine
Fuel system admits air Bleed air (check feed pump)
Detect the cause and remove clogs or
obstacles.
Replace filter element with a new one.
Check for function. Service fuel pump or
replace with a new one if less discharge
volume is found.
Check according to “Insufficient output”
Adjust clearance of intake/exhaust valves.
Cheek valve guide, spring, and rocker arm
mechanism for damage.
Check for injection timing and valve timing.
Totally check exhaust system (for dented or
twisted pipes and clogged silencer, etc.)
Check for part type No.
Service or replace fuel injection valves.
Check, service or adjust.
Check whether a proper voltage continu-
ously occurs in low temperature starting-aid
circuit while switch is turned ON.
When glow plugs are used, key switch is
turned “HEAT” position of key switch.
If glow plug is reheated, engine starts.
If not, glow plugs fail or circuit is defective.
If fire once occurs, and goes out if starter
motor is switched ON, voltage is insufficient
or circuit is defective (such as erroneous
selection of starter switch)
Clogged fuel supply piping or clogged air
vent pipe in tank.
Clogged fuel filter
Fuel feed pump failure
Insufficient compression
Improperly adjust valve stick or clearance in
intake/exhaust vlaves.
Improper injection timing or valve timing.
Clogged exhaust pipe (too high back pres-
sure)
Fuel injection valve failure or errors in
selection types.
Fuel injection pump failure
Does starting-aid in cold weather function
normally?
